Many people love the look and feel of wood furniture and countertops or cabinets. That sturdy, well-designed feel attracts people to real wood furniture, but it can be prohibitively expensive and difficult to maintain. Fortunately, paper backed veneer is a quality alternative to wood furniture, countertops, and cabinets. Wood paper backed veneers come in many different varieties of wood to replicate the look and feel of real wood furniture. There are bamboo veneer sheets, cherry veneer sheets, and oak sheets that can all be used to get the feel of real wood without the exorbitant cost.
But what, exactly, is paper backed veneer, and can it really adequately replicate the look and feel of real wood furniture? Paper backed veneer is a type of engineered wood, and the term “laminate veneer” can refer to any product with a thin face layer glued onto a core. Paper backed veneer is made by taking very thin slices of either real or faux wood and attaching it to a solid core. This is then adhered to flooring, cabinetry, and countertops to mimic the look of furniture made completely out of wood.
As mentioned above, there are generally two types of wood paper backed veneer: real wood veneers and faux wood veneers. Real wood veneer takes several thin layers of actual wood and presses them together. The pressed slices are then attached to a core made of plywood or some other man made composite wood. The outside layers of real wood veneers are usually taken straight from a whole log, resulting in the look and feel of real wood, because it is actually real wood.
The other option when it comes to paper backed veneers is faux wood. Faux wood veneers are made very similarly to real wood veneers, with one major exception. As might be expected from the name, faux wood veneer is made with plastic instead of real wood. The look of real wood is replicated through a process of printing photographs of real wood onto the plastic veneer. As techniques for reproducing the look of real wood progress, more people are choosing faux wood veneers because of their durability and relative ease of installation.
However, many people do prefer real wood paper backed veneers for several reasons. It is favored not only for its superior look and feel, but also because of its flexibility in terms of repair or staining. Real wood veneer sheets can be sanded or stained in order to repair or cover up any scratches, while faux wood paper backed veneer cannot be modified so easily. Helpful sites: band-itproducts.com
I recently did all of my floors in a real wood veneer and could not be happier with the results. It really does look and feel just like the real thing, and for half the cost!
