Safeguards for Confined Spaces No Small Matter

Preventative maintenance program

If hazardous energy is not properly regulated and controlled, the workers who service the machines and equipment can be seriously injured, or even killed. In order to keep these workers safe, there are practices and procedures called LOTO or lockout tagout training. For large open factory floors or confined space training, the LOTO practices apply.

The lock out tag out procedure includes shutting down equipment and isolating it from the energy source. This practice prevents the release of energy that could be hazardous during maintenance and servicing of the equipment.

Lockout tagout training as it pertains to confined space training can be challenging. When a rescue is needed, the confined spaces make it difficult. There is specialized equipment available for safe and successful rescue from a tight spot. Confined space training saves lives.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, is the federal agency responsible for enforcing the health and safety regulations. OSHA lockout tagout training is mandatory. All employees are required to attend training sessions on a regular basis. Whether the work environment is large or if it is a confined space training is not an option, it is a necessity.
